Chicago… Meh.
OK, OK, when I am in a town on business, I know I don’t get the “flavor” of it very well. But this is my second trip to a convention in Chicago… and my main feeling is… Dear Chicago… you are not New York.
I’m staying on “the Magnificent Mile” this time.
Um… I can shop at all these places in Charlotte.
I had Thai food last night. Unlike the last time, it was basically “good” mall Thai food.
This afternoon, I will have about 1 hour free to get out and about. I am going to go walk and give Chicago EVERY opportunity to impress me.
I will also find something a little more “hole in the wall” for dinner. Last night I was so hungry, I had to go to a restaurant that, while not a chain, WAS actually inside a mall, so what did I expect?
So maybe I’m just not seeing the “Chicago” part of Chicago… and I just need to get out of this Magnificent Mile…

There’s a very nice Irish place, or 100, downtown. I’ve only been there once though, so don’t rely on MY vague recommendation.

Lat time I was there was 1970. My mother was from Chicago, and we went back to visit. I remember having real Chicago pizza, a way cool house and lots of old women dressed in black speaking Italian. Maybe ask the hotel staff where they like to eat? Usually works for me.

By all means, if at all possible, get off Michigan Ave (or Mag Mile). Get thee too the neighborhoods if at all possible; Wicker Park, Roscoe Village, Lincoln Park, or Edgewater, to name a few. University Village, the neighborhood that houses U of I (Circle Campus) is home to Manny’s Deli. No, Chicago is not New York. Not better (or worse) just a different flavor, altogether. 🙂

Sadly, I am literally going to have about 1 hour unscheduled during this thing… If I had more free time do NOT think I wouldn’t have been showing up on your doorstep!!

Oh, and we don’t even want to discuss Oak Park. 🙂 Too bad you won’t be able to explore more. And too bad you’re being held hostage by the vast tourist land that is Mag Mile.
